Let me help to balance the scales of justice for you!
Paralegals are not lawyers and cannot practice law in all the areas that lawyers can. Paralegals provide professional legal services in the following areas:
1 - Small Claims Court: Civil matters valued at $35,000 or less.
2 - Ontario Court of Justice matters under the Provincial Offences Act (e.g. Highway Traffic Act offences).
3 - Summary conviction offences under the Criminal Code of Canada (maximum penalty less than two years incarceration).
4 - Administrative Tribunals (e.g. Ontario Landlord and Tenant Board, the Human Rights Tribunal, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board / Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal, the Social Benefits Tribunal, and many more).
5 - Alternative Dispute Resolution: Paralegals may represent client at mediation or serve as mediator or arbitrator.
6 - Commissioners for taking affidavits.
7 - Notary Public for witnessing or certifying, and attesting, the execution of a document, and certifying and attesting documents to be true copies of the original.

Legal disputes are always a conflict between competing interests and no legal professional can guarantee specific outcomes or victory to their clients. It is the responsibility of the legal professional to represent their client's interests to the best of their ability, to advise clients of their legal options and risks, to keep the information their client shares with them in confidence, to act according to the client's instructions within the limits of their scope of practice and within the law.
